Discovery Camp
As part of our initiatives at PapyrusClubs, we introduced a novel and unique program for kids during the summer holidays – “The Discovery Camp”. The PapyrusClubs Discovery Camp stands apart. It is built on the well established premise that the best form of learning is facilitated by assisting discovery.
Many of us have been excited by the mysteries and adventures which befall the Famous Five of Enid Blyton, The Hardy Boys and others, during their summer holidays. This prompted us to create a summer program in which children could be provided opportunities to solve mysteries and try their hands at various activities – the guiding principle being that they should “learn through discovery”.
We created the “Discovery Camp” with 10 exciting activities or “Clubs” as we termed them – The Detective Club, Robotics Club, Dramatics Club, T-20 Club, Photography Club, Debating Club, Mechano Club, Adventure Club, Music Club and a Factory Visit. In each one, we provided opportunities for children to explore, learn, realise their own interests and exhibit their talents. In all these activities, there was minimal/no teaching or guidance and yet, the learning was maximised.
We conducted two of these Discovery Camps, each spread over 5 days, covering over 100 children in the age group 6-13. It was indeed heartening to witness the learning experience and the benefits that accrued to these children.
