Why are so many students going abroad to study?
Is studying abroad really more promising than studying in India or is it just the glitz attracted to 'going abroad' that is motivating students to study in foreign institutions? Every year hordes of students leave the country for higher education. It has been termed “brain drain” as India seems to be losing much of its young, thinking, educated population to foreign shores.
While one section feels that this is just an expensive fad and is not attributed to any real aspiration for better education as Indian students often settle for community colleges and obscure universities just for the tag of studying abroad. However it is a reality that whatever course or university you attend Indian companies hanker for “foreign-educated” employees. Whether it is a degree from Iceland or the Bahamas the foreign tag holds lots of potential for students. Then again plenty of students do it for the experience of studying and living in a new country and culture.
While all reasons are possible and plausible what is the real motivation?

"It's after all a MATERIALISTIC world !!! "
Whether studying abroad or back home is good or bad - it's every individuals' personal perception and conscience. Pros and cons always exist, whatever be the object under the spotlight. Studying abroad has the ever-popular advantages such as better education(quality and practicality-wise, not necessarily though), better infrastructure, better pay and job prospects, etc. but we still cannot ignore the standard and quality of Indian universities and the education that they provide. But ask yourself an honest question (don't forget that it's not an interview or a speech for Bono or Kofi Annan, so be true to yourself) - If you're asked to choose between a gift of a biycle or a BMW sedan, which one would you take? Or maybe if you're given a choice between a paycheck of a million dollars and a minimal salary of 10000 Rs., which one would you want? Today's world does not belong to samaritans like Gandhiji; it instead is ruled by demagogues and "Midases". And even if you don't fit into this group, you still need money, and lots, if you want to survive in this world. Whether it's a necessity or a compulsion, or even a desire, we all have to be materialistic and selfish (literally). And when you are being paid around 160 Ks after graduating from a good US university against a few Ks being a graduate of an Indian university, which one would you opt for? But just being able to go abroad to study does not solve anything; it's very very necessary to get into a good university. Hopefully, most Indians go abroad to study only if they get into well-known reputed universities, so the so-called BRAIN DRAINERS aren't foolish, silly or worse (fashion wannabes). To finish off with it, IIT was ranked about 58th in the world a year or two back, while now it has sadly bid goodbye to even the 200th rank. So you get the idea; blame it on worsening performance and quality of Indian education or curse me or the list-makers from Forbes but the situation still remains the same - (i)Indian education has a long way to go and (ii)The world is screaming "MONEY" loud, still crowned by the halo of MATERIALISM !!!
Its true....
I too accept that people who abroad to study almost settle there and do not serve the country which brought them up. Its very much of their selfishness i must say.
Reasons to Study Abroad
Some reasons generally stated for study abroad are:
1.
Learning abroad will set you apart from other job seekers in a very competitive job market. You will highlight your experience abroad in job interviews and on your resume.
2.
Learning abroad can help you develop new skills, more independence and self-confidence. You'll return with new skills that can't be learned on campus.
3.
Studying overseas helps you see the world from a completely new perspective. The simplest things take on a new meaning when you are abroad.
4.
Education abroad introduces you to a new culture,a new way of life. You'll learn to recognize and appreciate how culture determines values and behaviors.
5.
Living abroad will give you an opportunity to make lifelong friendships with people you wouldn't have met.You might even find yourself 'adopted' by a local family.

Flying high
There r always ample reasons 4 anythin & everythin in life. It's 4 us 2 choose the 1 mst apt 2 our advntage.
There is defntly advntages of stdying abroad 'specialy in dvloped countries like US, UK & Europe. The fact that they r such developed countries is primarily bcause of the numbers & calibre of their Univs & the educated people there. It is for us 2 capitalise on this advantage so we can learn from the same & move our Country in the same dirxn.
There is no doubt that the facilities are better....the research base is vast & creates the academic aura in the campus....labs r xclntly equipped....faculty hv better training....wunderful academic blend of people from all ovr the world....academic responsibilty(u pay thro ur nose u r bound to take it more seriously)...just for a visa u pay 10000/-...tikets another 60000/- .....fees....20 lakhs....yeah a handful of students from 2 lakh students gt skolarship....hogwash!!!!...its called marketing with a capital M.
The main aspect....funding. The Universities hv plenty of funding to feed from....Governmnt, actively involved Industries, alumni (these 2 are more of value based contribution & highly commendable) & biggest of em all the fees pd by students....yes....u pay 1 lakh u get in nanos.....u pay 10 lakhs u get megas.....what u pay is what u get. quality comes @ a price....our education system is purely functioning on numbers & politically motivated caste driven system without which our univsities would run dry. Try attrakting a German/ Swede/ british teenager to come to india for studies....perhaps for kamasutra or mohanjadaro studies. now u know why??
Why abroad?
Studying abroad has become a trend or a habit if it can be understood in the right sense. The world recognises indian universities based on their previous achievements and standard of education provided. However, on these basis, the top universities are considered to be in the US. Also, the competition has strengthened over the years for securing seats in indigenous universities as well which shows that a lot of people do study in India and succeed. My personal feeling is that education can be persued anywhere but, service through occupation should be rendered to your motherland(India).
Education Abroad
I think education abroad can be good. Students go there because they might not have good education in their home towns. They will make new friends. There are better chances of jobs. They will be free. They teach the students nicely. Total number of students are less.
Therefore, many like to study abroad.
Education Abroad
I think the education approach, policy, infra structure and relevance to career is very high overseas. Not in India. I know of professional syllabus covering topics more than 2 decades old. It is like studying about how a battery works and using gadgets like iPod/cellphone etc.
Over time the knowledge repository has grown so high, that we in India are yet to tap the same. yes one of the arguments of policy makers is tht 70% of Indians live in the villages and it makes no sense in upping the syllabus.
Therefore, it makes it prudent and relevant to study abroad and come to India and work. I share the thoughts of some of the writers.
If you come back 2 India, its fine!
Look, if you're honest, infrastructure and the way of teaching is better abroad, in countries like Australia, Singapore, U.S and the U.K.
It's all very patriotic to say, "No! People shouldn't leave our home country! etc. etc.", but I don't think you're "betraying" India by studying abroad and then coming back to India. In fact, you will be adding to India's productivity if you return to India with your international expertise and using that knowledge to enrich India in whatever field you've majored in.
grass is always greener on the other side
according to me Indian education at college level is the best. To be frank it`s really upcoming. Going abroad nowadays has become a fashion statement. India has the best to offer to its children. I would say that by going abroad you are just betraying your homelandafter all the education it gives you here. The only advantage you get for studying abroad is a preference in job..
why work abroad when you have the best here.
cheer`s, jai hind
kiran
There is no grass on this side ... !
For anyone who thinks that we can compete with foreign universities at the graduate plus level.. my suggestion is.. go get a reality check.
For people who get the chance.. they must go abroad and explore the wide knowledgebase there and inculcate some useful skills (both technical and soft) along with necessary hands on expertise.
Then they can always come back.. and enrich their motherland with their newly earned value. Till then i believe we can all keep our patriotism latent. Isnt it so.?
Almost all U.S universities
Almost all U.S universities are very competitive, selecting only students with excellent grades and test scores as well as leadership skills from the 'International Pool'. Many other International Universities are less selective, but almost all require some demonstration that you have succeeded in your previous schooling and that you have the potential to success at a more advanced level. Most graduate schools also require a minimum grade point average (now getting higher & higher) from previous study. Colleges and universities abroad place a great deal of emphasis on neat, organised and clearly written presentations. Almost nothing is accepted in handwriting; projects and term papers should be typed or produced on a computer. More and more research at campus libraries is conducted using computers to access on-line resources instead of books. Most universities will issue students a personal electronic mail account upon enrolment and expect them to use it for homework assignments. While going from India, one needs to be realistic about their academic record and test scores, apply to universities whose requirements match thier academic background and interests & be aware that graduate work in Colleges abroad involves a great deal of independent work, classroom discussion & 'out of the box thinking'...forms of learning that are VERY VERY different from what one experiences back in India.
Let us therefore, set aside the "just an expensive fad" or "just for the tag of studying abroad" logic & understand the enriching experience an already bright student could gain through his/her Education Abroad - being taught by some of the best faculty (Nobel Laureates, Pulitzer Prize winners, Mac Arthur fellows), studying with like-minded students with similar aims & aspirations, availability of a range of academic pursuits paired with extracurricular activities/opportunities for higher research & public service & A CERTAIN FREEDOM IN EVERYTHING ONE DOES - WHETHER THE EFFORT OCCURS IN THE LIBRARY, CLASSROOM, LABORATORY OR ATHLETIC FIELD.
Well said, it is essential
Well said, it is essential that students understand the realities of studying abroad and not get swept up in the trend.
Freedom in education
I'd like to quote the eminent educationist and philospher JK on this:
"A school is a place where one learns both the importance of knowledge and its irrelevance. It is a place where one learns to observe the world without a particular point of view or conclusion. One learns to look at the whole of man's endeavor, his search for beauty, his search for truth and a way of living that is not a contradiction between conclusion and action. It is a place where both teacher and the taught learn a way of life in which conflict ends."
"It is the concern of these schools to bring about a new generation of human beings who are free from self-centered action, to bring about a mind that has no conflict within itself and so end the struggle and conflict in the world about us."
- J. Krishnamurti
I believe some of educational institutions overseas can live up this ideal. You are not judged on how competitive and goal oriented you are but rather on how you achive them in collobration with a range of individuals in an increasingly cross cultural global marketplace.
Some of the brightest entreprenuers have been school drop outs from some of the so called Ivy league schools and other successes have even more humble origins.
Success sways with the breath of heaven and if the mindset is right the whole world will conspire to provide the opportunity for success.
I agree with "nr" that to always pursue what one does wholeheartedly and act in a state of choiceless freedom without worrying out of the consequences of the action almost always guantees a succesful outcome!
