Want to Apply Abroad?

It is the time of admissions again and many of you are going to be applying abroad, either for under graduation or post graduation. There are some great universities out there offering some very interesting courses but getting there is a procedure. Here are a few things you might need to know:
Paperwork
Applying abroad involves a lot more paperwork that need filling, stamping, posting etc. Application forms, reference letters, passport copies, visa application forms, housing application and much more. But do not panic, prioritize- sort everything out on a need basis and send out forms in a timely fashion.
Make sure you get good reference letters from your school or college and make copies if necessary because you cannot be asking your old teachers to write out as many letters as you need. Some universities ask for specific kinds of reference letters that need to just be filled out instead of written; make sure you give the colleges what they ask for.
Visa
Make sure you send your college applications out much before the deadline so that you have enough time to get your visa.
Usually after you gain admission, the college/university will send you a student visa application form to fill out, which you would then have to send back to them. Only after you receive the proper documentation can you even apply for a visa. So try not to cut it too fine.
Housing
Gaining admission does not always mean you get housing as well. There is a separate process and housing application you need to fill out; try and send those out as soon as possible as they fill up fast. Also accommodation provided by the universities themselves tend to be a little expensive but if you are new to the place it is much safer to stay in the university dormitories. Once you get settled in you can always look out for places to rent.

General tips:
It is a new place so try not to be too adventurous. Get a feel of the place before you wander out by yourself.
Yes freedom is a great thing, but remember your parents have spent a lot of money on your education, and you have done a great deal of work to get into a good college so keep your grades up.
Get a map as soon as you land so that you can get reasonably familiar with the routes.
Budget- spend money wisely, remember the bank is not an unlimited source of funding.
As important as academics is involve yourself in extra curricular activities as well.
Make good use of all the resources made available to you.
