Making Tamil Compulsory

In a new and controversial move the Government of Tamil Nadu is looking at making Tamil a compulsory subject in colleges at the undergraduate level.
This move could well jeopardise the language departments of arts and science colleges and other languages might be forced to become obsolete.
Over and above this students from other states and even overseas will stop enrolling in Tamil Nadu colleges due to the additional language they would have to learn.
Will this move help the students? Or will it revive Tamil in the social context if more people study it?
