Coping with Compulsory Tamil Classes

The government of Tamil Nadu is making Tamil a compulsory language to be learnt at the college level. Most institutes have already been given notice and this rule might come into practice as early as the next academic year.
Will students be able to cope?
For students entering city colleges from other states, this could prove to be a big problem. Though they will start off at the basic level enforcing a new and difficult language will prove daunting and will be equally if not more difficult on the teachers. Those already well versed with the language will have to do an advanced course.
Compulsory Tamil is likely to come into practice in all arts and science colleges at the undergraduate level for all three years. This decision has of course created a flutter amongst the city institutions where language classes are not the primary areas of study. When students are opting for colleges to get into specialised areas of study should they be forced to cope with extra language classes? And will the extra burden affect the other languages taught and will they be no takers for them?
