Indulgent or Irresponsible?
Reams of paper have used talking about peer pressure and the pains of growing up in today’s times. But with increased incidences of youngsters acting out today, is enough really being done?
Minors drinking, minors driving and causing accidents are serious issues and not to be indulged and written off as “children will be children”. Parents should support their children, no doubt, but they shouldn’t be bailing them out of every quagmire they get themselves stuck in. A primary reason we witness such increased indiscipline or lack of control is the absence of accountability.
When a young boy was shot dead in a school recently the parents of the shooters were not only absconding but charges of ‘framing’ and conspiracy were shouted out. Similarly when two incidences of minor boys driving and causing damage to life and property were reported, scapegoats were easily found and the perpetrators went into hiding. Peer pressure seems like a lesser evil when compared to what parents let their children get away with.
Parents need to teach children right from wrong and children need to have a sense of integrity and courage. Of course mistakes happen, accidents happen, but a better example needs to be set when dealing with consequences.
